Reading Rockets

A Summer That Changes the Story
For more than 60 years, St. George’s Scholar Institute has stood as a steady presence in Louisville—opening doors where they were once closed and lighting a path forward for young people. Reading Rockets is where that work begins.

What It Is
Reading Rockets is a 7-week, full-day summer literacy program serving approximately 60 elementary students. Designed to prevent summer learning loss, the program provides structured, engaging instruction in partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools.

Why It Matters
Summer learning loss can set students back months. Reading Rockets strengthens reading skills, builds confidence, and keeps students engaged during critical summer months—ensuring they return to school ready to succeed.

How It Works
Students participate in small-group literacy instruction led by certified teachers and trained staff. Daily activities include reading practice, writing, and enrichment, all aligned with grade-level standards. Progress is measured through pre- and post-assessments.

Beyond the Classroom
The program provides summer employment for educators, hands-on experience for college interns, and reliable full-day support for families—strengthening both students and the broader community. Access for All Families contribute a modest fee, but no child is turned away due to inability to pay.

The Impact
• 60 students served each summer
• Measurable gains in reading proficiency
• Increased confidence heading into the school year
• Stronger connections between students, families, and educators

When a child learns to read, they gain more than skills—they gain a voice, a path, and a future.
